What the heck is that thing?

I thought about holding a contest to see who (besides Tricia) could tell me what this object is.  However, since I have like 2 visitors to my blog, there’s probably no point.  Anyway, if you’ve come here and are trying to figure this out, here’s the story.  My husband is a huge MINI Cooper fanatic.  This is defined as someone who has to have every weird gadget available for his MINI.  In the MINI world, there is a small cult following for something known as a Whalen Shift Machine.  It is a laser-engraved steel ball that replaces your shifter knob (I know, I don’t get it either).  Anyway, in good old NC, we have about 3 months of cold days, and about 5 months of really hot days (maybe not quite, but it seems like it right now).  That steel ball holds the heat and the cold like you wouldn’t believe.  As for the heat, think of the heated medallion in Indiana Jones and you get the idea.  So my wonderful hubby came up with the idea of a knitted “cozy” for his Whalen, so that he wouldn’t burn or freeze his hand.  It has taken about 6 prototypes to get the size just right.  Anyway - if for some strange reason anyone is interested in the pattern for this, please email me.  I don’t need to be the only crazy person on the planet knitting these!
