Melting down in more ways than one

Posted by Niki on Monday, July 17th, 2006

Let me start by saying it’s hot.  Darn hot.  Historically this is the hottest week in NC.  I’m so looking forward to it.  That in itself is reason for meltdown #1.  The power bill came today - meltdown #2.  It’s the highest it has been in 11 years in this house.  I can only imagine it next month.  Not that I want to, mind you!

Meltdown #3 is work.  I had a task due last Friday by 3:00.  I had set aside the whole afternoon to work on said task, only to have our entire network and file server crash at 12:15 on Friday.  No access to files, e-mail only, internet access at a snail’s pace, and no way to complete my task.  No problem, says the boss, Monday will be fine.  Today arrived, and with it an inordinate amount of drop-in visitors with questions, people looking for people that were obviously not me, phone calls with questions (inane and otherwise), trying to set up interviews for numerous people who have absolutely no idea where our school is located, and just otherwise crap.  Just crap, really.  So my new deadline was 3:00 today.  I worked through lunch, eating cold beans and weiners because it would take too much time to run to the microwave, sent Hayley on errands (1/2 day of camp only), and basically didn’t leave my desk all day except to go to the bathroom.  3:00 comes and goes, I work until 4:00 (though I was supposed to leave at 3:30), and the job still isn’t done.  It’s not that I didn’t give it my all - I gave mine and 3 others’, at least.  It just couldn’t be completed.  I’m off by $102.48, and I can’t find it.  At 4:00 I finally gave up, and decided it would be better with fresh eyes tomorrow.  We raced home, but have somewhere to go in just 10 more minutes.  This may lead to meltdown #4, but I’m trying not to.  I haven’t cooled off yet, and don’t really want to go back outside.  Arghh!

In knitting news, I finished up the wild stripe-y sock last night, and cast on #2 so that I would have something to take with me tonight.  Hopefully the A/C is cranked up where we’re going.  OK, no more whining, I promise.  But in order to keep that promise, I’m going to stop talking now!
