Crusoe socks – anyone?

Has anyone actually made the Crusoe socks from Knitty?  I’m nearly to where I think the toe decreases should begin, but the pattern says:
“Continue working in rounds until foot from back of heel measures 9 inches.”
Then it has you decrease 4 stitches every other round until you’re at 22(24) -from an original 44(48), then 4 stitches every round until you’re at 10(12).

My problems with this are twofold:
1. You cannot decrease 4 stitches on every round and go from 44 to 22 – mathematically impossible.  I’m working with 56 anyway, so that part doesn’t matter, but bothers me.
2. If I don’t start the toe decreases until the sock measures 9″ from the back of the heel, I’m going to end up with an enormous sock.  I wear a size 8, and my foot is only about 9 1/2″ long or so.

I’ve checked Knitty’s site and google for errata, but not found anything yet.  Should I just work it like I do most socks, and stop when it’s 1 1/2″ short of the total foot length?

Help!!!
