No, it’s not just my eyes

These socks, in Lorna’s Laces Watercolor (and yes, the same dyelot) are different colors. Not just different spacing on the color changes, but actual different colors. I thought I had noticed it in the balls, but didn’t think much of it until the 2nd sock was going. Not only does sock #1 have way more pink in it, it’s a whole different pink. One just has clearer, brighter colors, and the other is muddy. I know this sounds like complaining, and really, it isn’t. Truthfully, I like the colors in sock #2 (unfinished) better. And I thought it was just me, until I took them to Knit Night last night (hi guys!) and Sarah said, “those sure are different colors!” So see, it’s not just me. I am really loving these socks, and am chugging away trying to get these done before we leave for our trip in the morning.
Since we are leaving in the morning, I really should be packing instead of blogging. I do have laundry going, the girls have been taken to school, the groceries for the trip have been picked up, and now I’m stranded at the house, waiting for FedEx to come (sometime before 3:00!) with a package we need. This trip will involve about 5 hours of driving on each end (not me, thank goodness, so I can knit!), with 4 people in one MINI Cooper. Yes, we’re crazy. And we will have to be very light packers for this trip, so I’m guessing that the original yarn I pulled out for the trip will need to be weeded some. I know there’s no way I can knit 10 pairs of socks in 4 days, it’s just that I need comfort yarn. I will be stuck up in the mountains where there is no yarn (heaven help me if I break a needle!), and I want to be able to CHOOSE which project to work on, not be stuck with Hobson’s choice. If I start a pair and don’t like them, I want to feel free to change to another yarn/pattern on a whim. I like options – so sue me. I’ve begun exploring new and fun sock patterns, since I’m a little tired of the old stand-by crew sock with ribbed cuff and stockinette foot. I’ve pulled out some great patterns to take with me, though I’m not sure that in the twisty-turny mountains of NC I will be able to concentrate a whole lot on funky patterns. At least this year I’m working on 2 circulars instead of double points – we had a few worries last year about me in the front seat of the MINI with dpns and the airbag going off – we would have all been shish kebabbed!

OK, I’m really off to pack. Wish us fun, safe driving, minimal kids-in-the-backseat-bickering, and meeting new knitters! Oh – and good weather, please, as we’re hosting a drive-in movie Friday night, and driving in the mountains in the rain is no fun either!
