And then there was one?

I feel like our house is the Hilton hotel.  OK, well, we don’t have hot tubs, room service, or spoiled brat rich kids, but I do feel like there’s a lot of checking in and checking out going on!  Let’s see – Shea was gone all last week, and got home about 5:00 today.  Hayley had a friend over Friday afternoon, and ended up going home with her for the night.  She came home yesterday, then left today for a night at another friend’s house.  We took Holly to her “permanent” home tonight, so somehow we started the week with 3 kids, and now we’re down to 1!  At least until tomorrow.  It was sad to see Holly go – we’ve grown quite attached to her, but our little house was also overflowing with people, and it will be good to get back to normal.

One thing I did manage to do this week was teach her to knit.  Hey, she brought it up!  Apparently her mom taught her, but she said she was “no good.”  I pulled out some needles, let her pick some yarn (kool-aid dyed, of course), and started to cast on for her.  She said, “hey, I remember that, but I don’t do it quite the same (add cute Korean accent here!).”  Turns out I was long-tailing, and she backward loops, but she took the needles, cast on, and other than being reminded which way to wrap, she was off and running.  She’s doing a 3-color scarf, and has probably 3 feet done!  It was a good way to get her out of the bedroom, and into the living room with us, but I may have created a monster!  She said it was a good thing – I had “given her a hobby.”  And she needed one!  The other thing I accomplished this week was finding Kimshi in the local grocery store.  She said it wasn’t as good as homemade, but not too bad, and she was desperately missing it.  I had a lovely lesson in Korean food when she told me she was really craving some Kimshi.  It’s pickled cabbage, among other things, and very spicy.  It actually smelled a lot like a spicy spaghetti sauce, and it didn’t taste half bad, just very spicy, and it made my mouth water a lot.  Oh – and I think I tasted it for hours afterward.  It was one of those tastes that grew on you – at first, it was just lots of chewing, and really hot, but after a while, I actually thought I could have eaten more.  If you know my tastes, you’ll be shocked by that, but when I smelled it today, it smelled pretty good!

I’m back on the Lotus Blossom tank – 2 pattern repeats down on the bottom, and 3 to go.  Then I can figure out the short-rowing – fun.  I live for math!  I also have some baby stuff to start for a friend who’s due in January, and she (and her daughter) really want socks.  She actually wants little half-socks, that she can wear with mule tennis shoes, so I’m working up a pattern.  I’ve finished one, but since she has tiny feet, it’s hard to tell if it’s long enough – it’s certainly not long enough for me, or anyone else in my house.  If it works well, though, I’ll now have a use for all those leftover mini-balls of sock yarn in the house!
