Looking back

I’m looking back over the past year of posts – specifically at those about a year ago.  This time last year we had a great visit from our friends The Royal Family of Snarkville and a great trip to the mountains.  Unfortunately, there’s not a chance that either of those will happen this year, as real life (and lack of real money) will not allow it.  This week is once again crazy (I feel like I say that every week!), as Mark has both a work trip and a fun trip.  He’s gone right now (Why am I posting this?  Perhaps avoiding a lonely bed?), and won’t be home until late Tuesday night, then Thursday, he and Shea leave for a car thingy for 3 days or so, so Hayley and I are mostly on our own this week.  Real life starts back up this week, which includes gymnastics, at a new level, with a new class, on a new day.  Yippee – new parents to look at me like I’m crazy when I knit.

Last year about this time, I had a funny knit experience at the doctor’s office.  Well, I was back this week, and it got even better.  Imagine sitting on the table in one of those lovely paper shirts (open to the front, of course), and the lovely paper skirt draped about you, tucked under your butt so the passersby don’t see it when they open the door.  The only thing you’re wearing besides that is your lovely Crusoe socks, and when the PA walks in, the first thing she says is, “Did you make those socks?”  When I answered that yes, I did indeed, she says, “I thought they looked homemade.”  Now, give her a break, I know she thought that was a compliment, however, I was quick to say, “Handmade or custom made sounds better!”  When the nurse came in, the PA pointed out the socks, saying, “She knitted those!”  I of course got the “I could never do that” speech!  I thought that was the end of it.  The PA walked me to the lab for bloodwork (and we won’t talk about the cholesterol count, thank you!), and within a minute brought back one nurse, then another, then a lab tech, then yet another nurse, telling them all, “You’ve got to see her socks, she made them!”  This led to a huge knitting discussion (I swear, those things follow me everywhere!) and an invitation to one and all to show up at our Knit Night, even if they wanted to learn (or gasp – crochet!).  We’ll see who shows up – this could be interesting.  People who have seen all my parts, and come hang out with us to knit.

I know I haven’t posted pics in a while, won’t mention that busy thing again, I promise.  I did finish up the cute little half-socks for my friend, and she loved them!  They’re in the leftover Crusoe yarn, which is Lorna’s Laces Watercolor, one of my personal favorites.  I’m sure I’ll make her more, as I whipped one out in about 2 hours, which makes it an extremely gratifying project.  I pulled the Simple Stripes socks out today, and realized that I’ve been working on them for nearly a month, and I just didn’t like the way they were turning out.  The feet were too big, and I needed some decreases a ways back.  Mind you, I was probably an inch from starting the toes, but I just couldn’t leave them that way.  I knew I could figure out a way to work in some decreases and still use the short-row heel, but decided I’d go for a heel flap on these, so I pulled one off the needles, ripped it all the way back past the heel and ankle rows to the ribbing, and started a heel flap.  It’s now turned, I’m in gusset decreases, and much happier.  I will also make sure to finish one up before doing the other – no more two at a time for me.  SSS is not really a problem for me, and two at a time was just a pain.  I’ve almost finished pattern repeat 5 of the Lotus Blossom, which means it will shortly become flat knitting in stockinette, something I’m not particularly fond of, but it will mean that it’s about 1/2 done, and truly, the hard part is basically done, other than throwing in some short rows that aren’t in the pattern.  I’m still ignoring my ArtFibers sweater, as it was once again 90+ this weekend – I can’t wait for sweater season, but apparently I’m going to have to.  The only thing that leaves on the needles is a Lace Wing sock, which I have neglected for a very long while.  I’m hoping now that I have some nice sharp KnitPicks circulars, it will be easier to deal with!

OK, off to my lonely bed.  At least I’ll have time (and quiet!) to pray for my sanity to be restored!
