The legend of Bigfoot

Posted by Niki on Saturday, August 11th, 2007

So, when I was younger, there was a point in time where my feet grew a whole lot faster than the rest of me.  My dad thought it funny to call me Sasquatch, though of course I did not see the humor in that.  Now I’m fully grown (I hope), and have a pretty normal size 8 foot.  I have 2 daughters, one who is already in a 9 1/2 and still growing, and one who is tiny, weighs a whopping 70 lbs. sopping wet, and already wears a size 6 shoe.  If she keeps pace with her sister, she has another 5 years of growth (at least) ahead of her.  I call her Bigfoot.  I can’t help myself!

I know, where’s the knitting in all of this?  I’ve seen lace shawls online for a while, but really don’t see them much here in NC.  When on the SeaSocks cruise, I saw tons of gorgeous shawls on the cruise, and lots more in person when I met Alison, and saw all of the fabulous shawls from her book, I knew that I had to work to bring the shawl movement to NC.  I brought home yarn for 5 (I think) shawls from that trip, and have acquired enough for at least 3 or 4 more since then.  When I finally got my copy of The Book, each was more beautiful than the next, and I just couldn’t make up my mind, until I saw Bigfoot.  Then I just knew I had to do it.  It was a medium difficulty, smaller (elbow-length) shawl, and the cool sock yarn I got from Yarnzilla would be just perfect!  I finished it up on Wednesday, but today was the first chance to block it.  On the bedroom floor!  It’s about 19″ long, and gorgeous!

Pattern:  Bigfoot by Alison Hyde (small version)
Yarn:  Unsure – got it from Yarnzilla, it’s a private-label kind of thing, and I can’t seem to get info from them, other than it’s dyed by a lady who dyes for Misti Alpaca.  It’s 100% merino superwash, and super yummy, and I have LOTS of it.  About 165 grams, which should equate to about 685 yards or so
Edit – finally found out that this yarn is called One Sheep Hill!  And it’s 500 yards per skein.
Needles:  KnitPicks Options size 8

In other FO news, I finished Mark’s High-Dollar socks.  In case you’re wondering, this is what $56 socks look like.

Pattern:  My own original (hopefully will be written up before I forget what I did)
Yarn:  Main is Cherry Tree Hill Supersock Potluck in Earth, contrast is Regia stretch.
Needles:  KnitPicks 2.25 mm (small size 1)

They’re gorgeous, they fit, and they’re super soft.  I can’t wait to knit up more CTH!  Aside from the yarn saga, the funniest thing about these socks happened today, while I was cashiering for a yard sale at my parents’ house.  I had brought along the socks to finish them up, and a little boy asked me what I was doing.  I told him I was making a sock.  Another shopper at the sale said, “That’s a great way to save money.  Socks are expensive.”  I believe I made a rather funny face when I told her, “Not really.”  I think she would have passed out if she knew what they had actually cost.

In UFO news, well, there’s the playroom.  Which we have declared can no longer be called the playroom, but we’re not sure what to call it.  It feels funny to call it Holly’s room, since she’s not here yet.  I believe Shea cast a vote for the FER (Foreign Exchange Room).  Any suggestions will be gladly welcomed.  It has been “the playroom” for 12 years now, and old habits die hard.  The electrical wire is run, the A/C is in (hallelujah!) and the sheetrock is started.  Here are some pictures, though they don’t show you much, since the windows are covered up.

We have 2 weeks and 2 days.  Cross your fingers, ok?

And just when I don’t have time – I checked my status on Ravelry today.  There are 14 people ahead of me.  Yes, only 14.  I guess that means my invite is a day or two away.  I’m so excited to get in and see it, but I know it would be really easy for it to be a huge time-sucker.  I’ll just have to pace myself!
